Sometimes humorous but always real, Rick tells it like it is with personal stories of mistakes he has made and lessons he has learned through 30 years of workin' for the man. Over 30 years, Rick has made a lot of mistakes, but rarely has made the same one twice. He might not be the smartest guy in the room, but he isn’t dumb either and he knows how to navigate through changing times which is something everyone needs to know how to do. With additional wisdom from his father (that he should have paid more attention to), the author understands a career lasts an awfully long time and he hopes to make it at least slightly less awful for you than it has sometimes been for him (usually due to his own actions). All the author’s proceeds from sales of this book are going to children’s charities, so even if you think the book isn’t very good (doubtful, but possible), the cash is going to a great cause. Intended for those that are getting ready to enter the workforce and people who have been there for a few years and want to know how to set themselves apart from the "grunts" and avoid some of the most common mistakes rookies (and even veterans) make. Common sense isn't taught in school, but a lot of success depends on it and this book is crammed full of it. Chapters include information on the truth of unchanging human nature, managing relationships with others, the little things that you can do to stand out from the crowd and the importance of problem solving (which is mostly what business is, but what surprisingly few people understand). Learn about business as a team sport, how speaking less will usually make you appear more intelligent, the reality that everybody sells and that, if you party, you do it at your own risk. Lastly, the author asks a question everyone should answer for themselves early in their career: Are you working for the company or should the company work for you? Your career is your responsibility. If that's what you want, go get it!
